hi keith and all

finally solved the cable modem problem. here is how i did it.

first of all i am using a dual boot with winxp and redhat8. as i had said i
could log to the net from linux but not from windows. i am still not sure
what happens at the melita side (dhcp) but apparently once an ip is assigned
to a computer it is reserved for that connection because i keep getting the
same ip after rebooting my computer. after i get the ip bound on linux i
simply insert manually the ip on the windows side as if i have a static ip.
it is very important to insert subnet mask, gateway and dns ips.

i had previously tried it the other way round. binding the ip to windows
first and inserting ip manually on linux but it didnt work.

im really glad it worked :-D

joe
