JTextCheck is a Java API which I'm developing under the LGPL. It provides (at the time of writing) spell checking, hyphenation, a thesaurus and a dictionary for Java applications. Like the Maltese spell-checker for Aspell before it, it's released as a MLUG project (even though it's not Linux-specific). Take a look at the website.
