Are you sure xserver was installed? Try logging in as root and running XFdrake and you should get the setup tool for xserver.

Also I read about Mandrake and problems with NVIDIA but I don't know exactly what they are.

Good luck.

Hi List,
I think this is a tough one.

This morning I formatted my hard disk and installed Mandrake 9.2 (I was
previously running 9.1). The installation went fine, but X is not starting on
boot. When I type 'startx' the screen flashes several times, then I get the
following error:

START------

Using vt7
(EE) NVIDIA(0): No modes remaining for display device CRT-0
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error:
no screens found

When reporting server errors, please send the ful..... bla bla bla...

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 kinown processed) with 0 events remaining

END--------

I formated my hard disk again and tried to install Mandrake 9.1, and it too
gave the same problem! I then formatted again and installed Fedora Core 1 - it
worked fine. Of course, I don't want Fedora, I want Mandrake.

I suspect maybe I'm specifying the wrong monitor model during installation? Fedora
doesn't ask for it, but Mandrake doesn't detect the correct one. I have a MAG 996PF2
(19") on an nvidia GeForce 2. Of course, Mandrake does have a list of MAG
monitors to choose from, but as usual with my hardware, mine isn't listed. I don't
think it should be a problem - this monitor was working perfectly under 9.1 before I
formatted.

Can anyone help me?

Keith
