AFAIK, usually, the distros come with two packages for samba: samba server and samba-tools. The second one contains only the tools to connect to a Samba/Windows server and should be enough to allow you to connect a server. If you want to compile yourself the whole package, then you should read carefully the config options.

To help you debug the problem, you should try from console a smbmount command, something like

mount -o ip=ip.of.your.server //share_name /folder_whereto_mount -t smbfs

it will prompt you for the password, assuming the name your Linux user name.

Maybe you will want to give a try to LinNeighborhood (freshmeat.net).
