That really depends what package software was used to install. RPM based
installs will upgrade quite well if another RPM based distro is used.
Same applies to apt etc. Crossing over from one package manager to
another has proved to be problematic for me in the past. 

Nevertheless, if you have all of your stuff under /home/whatever and you
do not reformat/repartition, that data will still be there
