I'm sure if there were ever US interference, involving any kind of censorship/content control, there would be a very rapid and co-ordinated move to replace the current TLD setup with something more akin to that which you are talking about. It could be done now if there was a perceived threat. No point worrying about it though as there's no sign of these things coming to pass...yet! Regs.
