Your best bet would be to ask Dell. I personally opted out for SuSE
Linux Enterprise Desktop. I find it to be far more polished than
Ubuntu. Especially in the upgrading department. I use all type of
Linux distributions, both for work and for personal use.

For personal use, I find openSuSE to be the least error prone for
things to "Just Work <TM>". That is a personal opinion, but I base
that decision after trying, debian, ubuntu, mandriva, gentoo, slax,
kororaa, sabayon, fedora ... did I forget anyone ?

I just wanted something where I plugin the DVD, install and it just
works. I also figured, that Dell would get me a better deal on the
paid version of SLES with bundled plugins for multimedia which is
always nicer.

I don't think this is the time to be OSS zealots. What I want here is
for my hardware to work in Linux. If they choose SuSE, how will this
affect me as a Gentoo User? It probably still will, since those
drivers will be available upstream in the next version of the linux
kernel.

Changes happen one step at a time. Time will tell
