Sounds like you are installing the Vmware/VirtualBox guest additions. They
boost the performance of a Windows guest quite a bit.

I would use VirtualBox (not sure if its inside the OSE) with the seamless
feature. That allows you to hide your running VM and only show the windows
taskbar and IE. I think that to get a version of IE 5.5 you need to install
Windows 2000 since those are the only which still support it.
