I had done a search once on Ubuntu's packet manager for SPICE and I got Oregano (gotta love these names) http://oregano.gforge.lug.fi.uba.ar/, which seems to do something similar. Didn't try it out myself though.
Do you use the software academically or professionally? An interesting list to put together would be open source alternatives to the software required at UOM courses. So far the only real problem I had was in Windows Programming (no prizes for guessing why), though I guess if somebody really wanted to the Wine dlls and Mono would be able to deal with that too.
