I'm very happy that the subject how to make Linux popular has managed
to bring to life the discussion. Thanks everybody! I've been using Linux in my house ( in dreambox ie satellite TV) nearly 4 years. On my computer over 2 years. But I still consider myself a novice. As I teach in a school I know what people ask when I introduce Linux. Some programs for the man in the street are vital (even though for others are not so important). We should emphasize these programs Firefox (and the thousands of add-ons) Thunderbird Open Office (including drawing) VLC Audacity Rythmbox Music Player (for ipods especially) Amorok Serpentine Audio CD Creator Scribus Brasero disc burning Pidgin Internet Messenger AMsn Azureus Gimp Xsane Image Scanner Webcam viewer (I still did not solve my problems with Creative Live Cam Pro) Tea Text Editor (which should correct maltese grammar mistakes - I still did not overcome all the problems!!) Blue Tooth File sharing Connecting with Routers (Another difficult hurdle) The government has made a little step forward in providing Audacity on teachers' laptops and Tux paint. Let's hope we continue on the same path!! By the way, does anyone use the go-mobile card which connects to internet all over the country with Linux? Although we need to make more popular online support such as: https://help.ubuntu.com/ But people would still prefer a course done in a classroom environment, especially the knowledge that if they get stuck, help is not far away.... https://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=134&osCsid=33d7e6cb96f66b345817299efda4478c Another common problem in families is how to make happy not one child but two or more at the same time. Hence solutions where one computer could be shared with others at the same time. Slovenia, France, Spain, Russia and others have chosen the ncomputing.com method. But they are still using an old Ubuntu. But it would have saved the government thousands of liri as one computer could be shared between 30 users!! On the other hand linux provides thin clients for the same solution. Keep discussing!!! |
