National Information Society Advisory Council Session 15, Friday 25th July 2008 Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta Connecting Every Home, Connecting Every Citizen Next Generation Networks The ICT infrastructure covering Malta's territory has been one of key factors in the popularisation of technology across our society and economy, placing the country among the leaders in key information society indicators benchmarked by world-acclaimed sources. The same infrastructure is also one of the key features in the country's value proposition to attract investment. The deployment of next-generation networks, carrying voice, data and other communications at new speeds is the next big revolution in the telecommunications. Amongst the technologies considered in the deployment of the new networks is fibre. Fibre optics are considered as the only 'no limits' technology to connect subscribers to the networks. The deployment of fibre reaching to the premises of subscribers enables a myriad of new services that require high-bandwidth and constant speeds. From highly interactive eLearning applications, to the virtual monitoring of patients at home, and remote working solutions including video streaming; fibre technology removes the barrier of broadband speed and capacity and provides symmetric solutions where the end-user has equal upstream and downstream speeds to produce and push content. The deployment of next generation networks is one of the key action lines of the Smart Island Strategy. A Green Paper on the subject will be launched in NISCO.
