Here is an article you all might like to read : http://www.linux-magazine.com/online/blogs/paw_prints_writings_of_the_maddog/universities_that_do_not_use_free_software_time_for_a_boycott
It is quite relevant for Maltese students, although we can't boycott University of Malta as most of us don't have any real choice as to which University to attend. However, it certainly is possible, at least in my course to use a high amount of free software. Personally, I got through my first year in BSC ICT using just Linux, and probably 95% free software. The only software that didn't work on Linux was PSpice. (And I had to install Windows on virtualbox just for that). Another non-free software package was the Xilinx ISE, also used in the same course, but it had a linux version (TK, looked like crap :S). Of course, some proprietary software programs are probably better than their OSS equivalents. Smartdraw is far better than Dia or OpenOffice Draw. But for my needs, Eclipse is definitely an excellent Java IDE, and OpenOffice is sufficient, too. _______________________________________________ MLUG-list mailing list [email protected] http://linux.org.mt/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mlug-list
