There was a deal made with Amazon and Microsoft, true.

But I highly doubt it's for Amazon to put Windows 7 on the Kindle - it just doesn't make any sense. They would have to develop all the technologies needed to make win7 an embedded OS. They would have to create an app store. They would have to pay licensing. They would have to depend on Microsoft for updates. Also, the reason given in this article that "choosing one Linux distro over another would alienate many users" is illogical because 1) choosing windows alienates all of them 2) most people don't know what OS kindle runs or frankly don't care.

It will be interesting to see why the Amazon-Microsoft deal results in, but Amazin has far from "dumped" Linux!
