First of all, he has to stop using the laptop until he finds a way to
restore his files, otherwise the data can get overwritten, and it's
pretty much kaput from there. (unless you pay a skilled extractor)

I've used http://ntfsundelete.com/ (free) to recover deleted files.
They provide an ISO image which can be booted from.

There are other good solutions, but they might not be free.

Second, he really needs to get used to backing up his data.
