You can connect to GMail via POP and IMAP. Click on Settings and then
on the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab. Should be relatively simple to
configure Kmail to use it; I was using Thunderbird to access my mail
for the longest time, but switched to the web interface recently.

I like the idea of using GMail instead of the ISP's mail service since
my mail isn't tied to any one ISP.

Bell in general has gone downhill over the past several years. I don't
even use their phone service anymore, and they have lost me as a
customer for life.
