Thanks for all the input. I ended up buying a Canon Pixma MP240. While I wasn't shopping for another printer, I did not have colour, and the copy feature of the multifunction will be useful.
I was a little nervous at first since I bought it on impulse, but surprisingly Canon does provide drivers for Linux. Well, at least in Europe. I did, however, run into some trouble with them because they only provide i386 binaries, though the source is included. Still, I had trouble building x86_64 packages for Jaunty. But following along a Ubuntu forum article, I was able to get the scanner working with SANE by compiling and installing the nightly CVS back-ends, and the i386 printer drivers from Canon worked as is when I installed them with --force-all.
