I have Centos working correctly as a web server, and since I did not require sendmail, via the gui interface I stopped the service.
When it came time to access the system via putty, I was unable to get in. I tried stopping iptables, still no luck. I restored iptables and sendmail services and voila, putty works again. (Using SSL to connect). Perhaps that is the problem.
