If you need proper sysadmins, hire a contractor. I've learned a long time
ago not to deal with any hosting company for support that ends up
outside of their network.

With dedicated & rack you have control 'nuf said.
With shared:
If everything is plain vanilla and you don't need support and you
don't mind imap timeouts then it doesn't matter where you host. On
the other hand if you have *any* problems or try to change anything
slightly out of the ordinary then you are sc***ed because you can be
certain that iweb will mess it up. They have done so several times
for me each time costing several days of wasted time and effort.
They have negative credibility & goodwill from me.

And I'll have to disagree with you guys on this one.
I've had a few clients located at iWeb (shared, dedicated and rack) and they
have been really happy with the general services. For the shared hosting,
the load of my clients servers rarely got over 1 or 2... which is great when
you think the app show the load after a cpu intensive operation.
Having a lot of questions for billing is normal when you deal with an
international provider (iWeb is local to us, but they deal all around the
world). I guess they don't like the idea of someone not paying their bills.
I do agree that reaching a sysadmin can be quite hard, but now they (an an
entity) do answer really quickly to twitter messages... and who need a
sysadmin when their system is well managed (ok, this is more for dedicated
and rack).

anti-disclaimer: I do NOT work for iWeb and they are NOT one of my client. I
have client located at multiple locations (iWeb-couture,
iWeb-Ile-des-soeurs, Canix-downtown, Canix-Ile-des-soeurs, Peer1, Hypertec),
so I guess I have a good based for comparison (mainly in leased rack space
though)

I have to agree. I tried renting two dedicated servers from them and
they wanted enough personal info to easily max out a credit card. Not
to mention identity theft. They made me feel like I was trying to rip
them off.

iweb has HORRENDOUSLY BAD customer support & their shared hosting imap

MIGHT be ok but avoid contacting them you'll waste time and money

You can always get a linux dedicated server from iweb, there wouldn't
be
any limitations then.

Subject: [MLUG] OT: Canadian Linux web host
Hi,
I'm looking for opinions on good Canadian web hosting provider for
personal use. I'm looking for something with sane price with no silly
fine prints and under Linux. (iWeb for example offers 600GB of disk
space but limits you to only your web site content on that disk space,
beside, they are only on Windows)
It's a big plus if the provider supports SSL/TLS for Emails with an
alternate SMTP port to bypass Videotron's outgoing port 25 block.
It's
also a big plus if the control panel is Direct Admin.
