Assuming everything is installed right and just the startup links are 
missing, this should do it:

 > [sudo] update-rc.d gdm defaults

If you are using xdm instead, substitute xdm for gdm.

BTW, installing xfce does not install a DM login by default... you need 
to install xdm/gdm still.
