Well, if you can set up your cron job to spit an error to syslog if it fails, times out etc, then you can certainly parse syslog for this. One problem is logwatch uses cron, so if cron totally dies, you will not get alerts.
You could perhaps use something like monit (which I also use) to watch the service and restart it if needed (plus alert you), along with some smart log parsing to make this reasonably safe from borkage. I bet there are other, probably better ways, this is just how I do it.
