I am often asked about setting up a "small server" for web, Nice write up Jimmy, one other thing I do is to set the SSH listening port to be something non-standard. It is really just obscuring the fact SSH is there, but it stops all those logged intrusion attempts, and if you put the port up high, the server looks completely closed to incoming traffic on many port scans.
One more point is that you can use SFTP instead of FTP and save yourself some pretty major headaches, but this is harder to do with a multi-user setup if you want to restrict them to their $HOME. In fact, anyone with a nice easy way to do this, please chime in. You have to start messing with chroot and jails etc... which IMO quickly becomes more unwieldy than an FTP setup. One last point is that the Ubuntu Server Guide included under System>Help and Support (click on advanced topics, then installing server applications - does anyone know if you can send a link to help pages somehow?) is quite good and comprehensive for beginners. It has step-by-step guides for most web services. Please do post it to the site, if you need help or have probs, shoot me an email.
