Number portability is also availability by exchange.
Acanac had 514 and 450 available numbers but I had to accept what they
had, and they sadly did not have an exchange policy.
I am still very happy with my www.vonage.ca deal and service. Wife is
on phone at least 4 hours a day (she comes from a large family).
Thats 25hrs per week average.

many (most) voip providers do not meet this test.
I was lucky. My wife uses her cell-phone for call-only.
Had my home phone number ported to her cell (Rogers)
and have permantently forwarded that to my new voip number.
Roger's dings me for call forwarding minutes, but at least people who
didn't get notified of the new phone number can still get to my voice
mail (which delivers straight to my email, in mp3 files, for free)
p.s. my phone is 5.95$/mo, + 1.50$ for 911 support.
and then around 2 cents a minute (for outgoing calls.)
Altogether, I pay less than 10$, and it still feels like an old
fashion phone (user experience for my wife.)
yeah there was a 5$ bump for dry-line to my ISP. but it's still less
than a third of what Bell shook me down for every month, and don't get
me started on LD rape.
