Thank you for the suggestions! I have discovered the cause of the problem, and that was accidental! Apparently, GIMP does NOT work when you and a tablet to the input devices without you jumping through flaming hoops in Ubuntu to get the thing to work properly... I found out about some slolutions in an mlug.qc.cq forum that Fabian pointed me to. Someone there directed me to a description of one solution and it's not all that obvious just what exactly you are supposed to do but, I got through perhaps two thirds of it and will have to resume that job when I have two computers side by side and connected to the 'net again.
