Debian Squeeze Problems Ran into things that were not expected which are mostly gnome problems I mounted some drives, then tried to unmount them. I could not umount them. I was asked for the root pw, and when presented, that failed. However, from command line, I succeeded with the umount. *But *on the subsequent boot, the other partions (drives) were back there again.
I looked at user management, and found that I was locked out. Trying to use it even locked out gnome. Gnome was locked up tighter than a doornail. (reboot necessary) I have a root password, and am asking why I cannot log in as root via gnome GUI. I looked inside of /etc/pam.d to attempt to find some bypass, but to no avail. There are times that root in gui is most useful. I could not start or stop a service using the Gnome GUI interface. (I don't need bluetooth, etc). *Solving the problem.* Finally, via command line, I created a dummy user, took a backup of my home directory and replaced my home directory with a copy of the dummy home directory. After a chown -r, and a log to the original user id, the problem with Gnome appeared corrected. Metacity is not production quality, in my view. For example, I have a root terminal icon, for which when I clicked the icon and I entered the password 1 time. Now, whenever I click on this icon it gives me command line root. Something is wrong, or I lack debian internals knowledge. My Fedora 14, to me, is better behaved, and as far as I can tell, more stable.
