X is considered by experts to be sufficiently insecure that they advise
against using it in superuser mode. Apparently it has specific features
that make this a problem; it's a lot older than security concerns.

Which is why gnome won't let you log in as root by default.

However, on the gdm login window, I get an "actions" manu with a item
"configure login manager". After providing a rot password, one of the
options under the security tab is "Allow local system administrator
login".

That's under lenny.

My gnome, under applications->accessories gives me a root terminal. Is
that what you tried?

Then there's also su under a regular terminal. No GUI this way, though.
