[MLUG] bash vs dash

With the recent upgrade to squeeze a bunch of my bash scripts are 
screwed. This is my fault for not coding agnostically I am sure, but 
does anyone have a translation table for bash to dash?

Just for instance how can I count the number of characters in a word?
I was using NAMENUM=${#UNAME} but this appears to have broken.
