IIUC the `os-prober' package should do that for you.

If it's not installed, file a bug report against Debian's installer
saying that if the installer recognized the Windows partition, it should
probably make sure that os-prober is installed by default.

If it's not installed, file a bug report that it doesn't seem to work.

The file needed is /boot/grub/grub.cfg actually, but don't edit it, edit the file I mentioned earlier or else you lose your changes when you upgrade.

I think os-prober is probably there, squeeze apparently has trouble seeing XP for some reason. Trying to break bad habits I assume ;)
