I will just throw in that Android has an excellent free workout/GPS logging program called cardiotrainer, very comprehensive, gives you access to your data, or they will show it to you if you prefer.

I use a Garmin 60cx and have used it for many years with Ubuntu (you still need windows to update maps and so on, but I have not needed to fire up my garmin VM for a long time now). I hike and geocache with it and use gpsbabel for all manipulations (that software will do pretty much any GPS manipulation of data you could ever need).

With almost any GPS you can log your tracks and visualize them in google earth or openstreetmaps etc.
