I had the same issue in my case to solve it on my nvidia card i used the
grug kernel option vga=0x369 btw that is 1680x1050 16 bit, to find out
the max your card can do. use the vbeinfo command at the grub prompt to
get the value your card supports and all issues should be resolved. btw
this same issue plagued me every time i used the nvidia binary driver
not an issue with nouveau drive since the modeset option handles this.
