Actually, Nokia changed its license from GPL to LGPL a few years ago. Before that, you had to use the proprietary license if you didn't want to publish your Qt-based application under the GPL. Development with Qt is actually quite simple, I recommend you refer to their excellent (and up to date) online documentation rather than aging books.
