This sounds like a problem I ran into recently with 3.2 kernels on a Dell Vostro 3400. You can see here:

I'm not sure the status of the patch in mainline, but I understand it is queued up and should be accepted soon. Alternatively, you could revert to an older kernel. 3.0.6 was working for me prior to this bug. As for writing everything down to document the crash, you might find all you need by searching your logs. On my distro, I used /var/log/messages...
