This is all unfortunate, but its a decision that has been taken by the fuse
people at the kernel level (user others than the one who mounted the fs
can't
access it, including root) and there is nothing we can do about it.

Hi all,

I have an unexpected permissions situation:

drwx------ 85 brian brian 12288 2012-07-24 12:50 ..

brian@thoralf:~$ sudo ls -la |grep gvfs
ls: cannot access .gvfs: Permission denied
d????????? ? ? ? ? ? .gvfs
brian@thoralf:~$ sudo ls -la .gvfs/
ls: cannot access .gvfs/: Permission denied

brian@thoralf:~$ sudo su
root@thoralf:/home/brian# ls -la|grep gvfs
ls: cannot access .gvfs: Permission denied
d????????? ? ? ? ? ? .gvfs

Thanks Yanik and all others who replied.

I was asked what I was trying to do. The situation arose while making
a full back-up of /home before a distro hop. (I ran a du -sh on my
/home via sudo and got the same sort of puzzling output as produced
above).

While I know next to nothing about FUSE and gvfs, I feel pretty sure
there's nothing involved I need to back-up. So, my goal in posting was
simply to understand a permissions situation I would have thought
could not arise :-)

All of this is a bit above my pay-grade, and while I'll take it on
faith that the FUSE and gvfs people have their reasons for what seem a
puzzling choice, faith is all I have here.

Thanks to all,

Brian vdB

This may be the answer you need: http://askubuntu.com/questions/114165/rsync-gvfs-questions

You need to exclude .gvfs basically.
