This Week's Puzzler: Walking and Riding to Town-Is It Faster?

This puzzler was sent in by Doug Burnside. Of course, I did have to obfuscate and
de-clarify.

Doug writes, "John and Fred have a dilemma. They need to get back to town as quickly
as possible, but they only have one bicycle between them. And, of course, you can
travel faster on the bike than you can by walking.

John says, "We'll leave at the same time. You start walking, and I'll ride the bike
for a mile. Then I'll leave it by the side of the road, while you keep walking. When
you get to the bike, you get on it, and you ride for a mile, and then you leave it by
the side of the road. When I get to it, I'll ride another mile. We'll keep leap
frogging like this until we get to town.

"Since we'll be riding part of the way and walking part of the way, each of us will
have a higher average speed than if we walked, so we'll get there faster.

Fred says, "That isn't going to do any good, you dope! Think about it. Between the two
of us, one or the other is going to walk every inch of the way from here to town. So,
we can't possibly get there any faster than if we just walked all the way and didn't
use the bike at all."

Who's right? Or, like us, are they both wrong?

Remember last week's puzzler? Some New Barber Math

This puzzler was sent in by Khalid Balamah.

He says, "I like your radio show. I started listening just to improve my English,
since I am a non-native, and I am now addicted to the show." And, his last sentence
is, "Just remember to fabricate a story, as usual."

Here it is:

A barber had his first customer of the day, who happened to be a friend. When he was
done, the barber refused to take the money from the customer. The fellow said, "Look,
I know we're friends, but, business is business. I want to pay for my haircut."

The barber said, "Here's what we'll do. You open the cash register. I don't have any
idea how much money is in there. But, you match whatever is in there, and then take
out 20 bucks."

The customer says, "Okay," and he does that.

The barber says, "Gee, I kind of like this." So, the next customer comes in, he gets
his haircut, and the barber says, "You can do the same thing my first customer did.
Open the cash register, match what's in there, and then take out 20 bucks."

The second customer does that, and he leaves. The third customer does the same. The
fourth customer, after receiving his haircut, opens the cash register, and says, "I
can't do it. "

The barber says, "Why not?"

"There's no money in here. Not a cent."

The question is, how much money was in there to start?

Here's how much:
