The cartalk.com TIME KILL WEEKLY Special Return to Bugsy World Edition ______________________________________________ Killing Time, Unencumbered by the Work Process ______________________________________________ Maury Maille, Editor
What's new at Car Talk Plaza? Cannolis, gnomes and swimming costumes, that's what. This past week was the annual Car Talk staff summer retreat to "Bugsy World,"-- - the spread that John "Bugsy" Lawlor set up that's at least an hour and a half from everywhere. It includes gnome-infested, heavily manicured lawns, and enough outdoor accoutrements to give a patio furniture salesman heart palps for a week. After the show last week, we hightailed it out of the studio, bolted the doors to Car Talk Plaza and piled into the new Chrysler 300C (never exceeding media fleet regulations, mind you) for our pilgrimage to Bugsy World. And, here's the official documentation of us Car Talk lowlife, just for you, our loyal Time Kill Weekly readers: http://www.cartalk.com/content/timekill/bugsy-world.jpg Left to right, that's Doug "the Subway Fugitive" Berman; David "Rainman" Greene; Douglas "F" Mayer; Louie Cronin, "The Barbarian"; Tommy; Bugsy Lawlor; and Ray. We weren't disappointed. Bugsy and his wife, Ginger, put on another gala staff luncheon, featuring, we believe, every shrimp harvested this summer from the Eastern seaboard, plus enough Italian pastries from the North End to satiate the entire Soprano clan. Thanks, Bugsy! In other news, we have an update for you. Our Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program has just turned six months old. So far, we've processed 1,218 cars and donated $246,396 to stations. Why are we telling you this now? Because August and September are the two most popular months to buy a new car.... which means you just might have an eyesore sitting in your driveway. Or even a good, old car that you'd rather donate than trade in. Vehicle donation is a great way to get rid of an old car, and realize a hefty tax deduction. For the details, see http://v-dac.com/cartalk/ Of course, there are some considerations, mind you. As were spelled out to us by IRS Commissioner, Mark Everson, who actually called into Car Talk this week-- causing Tom and Ray to nearly fall out of their chairs. You can hear that moment by listening to segment five right now, at http://www.cartalk.com/Radio/Show/online.html By the way, if you are indeed shopping for a new car, and are the least bit concerned about safety, here's an important bit of safety news that just came out this week, Turns out, you're more likely to die driving an SUV than a passenger car. How can that be? It's thanks to the SUVs' now-infamous propensity to rollover faster than your neighborhood beagle. For the full report, click on our Safety News Flash at http://www.cartalk.com If you'll excuse us now, it's time for our staff's annual post-Bugsy-World angioplasties. Yours in staying upright while driving, Maury Maille Staff Cannoli Taster Car Talk Plaza P.S. Here's this week's Lame Joke Of The Week, courtesy of Matt Olenn: An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives retired to the kitchen. The two elderly gentlemen got to talking, and the first one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant, and it was really great. I recommend it very highly." The second man asked, "What was the name of the restaurant?" The first man sat and scratched his head and thought a long time. Finally, he replied, "What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know ... the one that is red and has thorns." "Do you mean a rose?" asked the second man. "Yes, that's it," the first man said. He then turned toward the kitchen and yelled, "Hey, Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?" ******************* Doing some car research?
