This Week's Puzzler: Keepus Leftus, Brutus

RAY: This week's puzzler comes from the wonderful world of ancient history and
transportation.

Some time ago, a team of British archaeologists came upon some ancient Roman
ruins. Among the ruins was a stone quarry, a nearby fortress of some kind, and
what appeared to be a small town, with some houses, some livestock pens, and so
on.

All of these things were connected by roads -- those famous stone roads built
by the Romans. In fact, they probably obtained the stones for the roads from
the very quarry they discovered. After some careful observation, these
archaeologists determined that the Romans drove their carts and wagons, and,
probably chariots too, on the left side of the road, just like the Brits do.

How did they know this?

TOM: The signs that were up. "Keep left."

RAY: Right. "Keepus leftus, Brutus."

Think you know?

Remember last week's puzzler? A Puzzler From The Final Frontier

RAY: This is from the wonderful world of space travel. This puzzler was sent in
by Dave Foster. I actually had to obfuscate a little, but here it is:

In the early '60s NASA was sending electronic gear into outer space on unmanned
missions. They'd already sent a guy into space but they wanted to make sure
that if they were going to send people up for longer flights, that they had a
chance of surviving. They were sending up this electronic gear to test a
variety of things like radiation exposure, and so on.

The equipment kept failing, but they couldn't figure out why.

Finally, someone determined that the circuits were overheating, so they
installed a fan to cool off the devices.

But the problems persisted. Why?

Here's the answer:
