My question is, is the gibberish (i.e. &lt; instead of <) already present in 
the file you get out of Supermemo, or does it only show up after you import in 
Mnemosyne?

In the first case, a workaround would be to open the Supermemo file in an 
editor, and do a search and replace of &lt; with < and of &gt; with >.
