It's easiest to do this when all of the relevant cards are in the same
category. I'm not sure if that is your situation or not, but if so,
here's my suggestion for making the process semi-automated:

I'd try exporting the relevant set of cards as .xml with learning data
preserved, making a backup of that .xml file (in case something goes
wrong), opening the .xml file in a plaintext editor like Notepad or
Notepad++, and then doing a Find-Replace operation to add in the
overlay style to each card. You could then delete the original cards
in the "Edit Deck" screen of Mnemosyne and reimport them from the
edited .xml file, again making sure to preserve the learning data when
you import the file.
