I'm reasonably sure that that wasn't the case. After every failed import, I
closed Mnemosyne (to force it to write changes to disk), and grepped for two
strings that were unique to the file ('be missed' and 'losing face'). Nothing
showed up until I tried the default category and closed, at which point the
greps showed entries in default.mem
