I have a similar problem inputting simplified Chinese under Linux
(Linpus Lite, using SCIM or Smart Common Input Method - used to input
many different languages, like Microsoft IME in Windows). The default
way to activate SCIM is Ctrl + Spacebar - within Mnemosyne this does
precisely nothing, and I cannot find how to activate SCIM, so I write
in any other text processor and cut and paste into Mnemosyne. (I can
input Chinese into Mnemosyne using Microsoft IME under Windows XP so
maybe it's a SCIM issue under Linux)
