OK well, problem fixed. I don't know what the cure was, but it works now. I downloaded the Astro file mgr from the market to help verify my directory structure. The /sdcard folder was indeed present directly under root. I verified that I could indeed open both audio and video files from it (as I felt I was able to do previously).
I (re)created a folder on the SD card called mnemododo. I ran the Tester program and this time it found all files that it was supposed to (everything on the SD card and some other files). The only thing that I can pinpoint that I did differently was that I consciously unmounted the phone from my desktop before running Tester as well as Mnemododo. Although I know I tried this yesterday, Astro triggered my brain to unmount and run Tester. That's when I saw all the files. In short, the program works (and well, I might add). The problem would appear to come down to operator error, but I really don't know what I did differently from yesterday to today.
