I didn't mean to suggest that \boldsymbol would necessarily work, just
that amsmath would have something to do it.

Use \pmb (see 9.6 in the amsmath user guide for more information:
ftp://ftp.ams.org/pub/tex/doc/amsmath/amsldoc.pdf Browse from the
web. Don't try to download it directly or it will ask for
credentials). This works on my machine:

<$> \pmb { \alpha \theta \o \tau \beta \vartheta \pi \upsilon \gamma
\gamma \varpi \phi \delta \kappa \rho \varphi \epsilon \lambda
\varrho \chi \varepsilon \mu \sigma \psi \zeta \nu \varsigma \omega
\eta \xi \Gamma \Lambda \Sigma \Psi \Delta \Xi \Upsilon \Omega
\Theta \Pi \Phi } </$>
<$>\alpha \theta \o \tau \beta \vartheta \pi \upsilon \gamma \gamma
\varpi \phi \delta \kappa \rho \varphi \epsilon \lambda \varrho \chi
 \varepsilon \mu \sigma \psi \zeta \nu \varsigma \omega \eta \xi
\Gamma \Lambda \Sigma \Psi \Delta \Xi \Upsilon \Omega \Theta \Pi
\Phi </$>
