One solution to the spam problem might be to implement Akismet. Lots of
people use it especially for spam filtering Wordpress comments.

Greetings,
I do in fact read everything on the mailing list; I just need some time
to catch up sometimes.
It may not be explained very well, but the concept behind the source
field is to cite the actual data used to prepare the cards, not simply
provide a link back to the creator's website- unless that website is the
source of the material. This field was added because most of the
creators of card collections get their data from some other source, and
it is important to cite sources.
I agree that being able to add links would be helpful. In fact,
originally we had this feature. Unfortunately, as you suggested, during
the time the feature was available there were a large number of somewhat
sophisticated attacks trying to flood the website with bad links. As
part of locking down the website, I disabled the ability of
non-administrator users to add links.
At the moment I am bit pressed for time, but around the release of 2.0 I
think it is reasonable to consider major upgrades to the site, and
restoring this feature could be part of that. For the time being,
though, I'm not sure of a good way to open up the site again while still
keeping it safe from spam.
Cheers,
Patrick

As a side note. I think if you implement this feature you'll have a
higher
adoption from card creators - especially those who are associated with
some
more or less serious learning sites.
You'll have to be careful though - in this case you'll get also more
spammers that will create (or even automatically generate) low quality
card
collections just for the sake of having a backlink. What can help is have
moderators to approve newly created collections.
Food for thought...

Hi,
This is something for our webmaster, Patrick Kenny.

That's the thing - this "Source" field is not a hyperlink, it's just a
plain text. I need it to be a hyperlink so that your users who like my
card collection could click on it and end up on my lessons (without
having
to copy the url and paste it to the browser's address bar). Besides,
this
hyperlink will increase the page rank for my lesson page - this is all
for
the Search Engine Optimization purposes.

Thank you Gwern.
Have you thought of making the credit to the authors on the site
more
prominent? Like a backlink to the site/page of the card collection
author? That is actually the decision factor for me.

I don't really know what you mean. If you look at existing uploads
(like I suggested) such as http://mnemosyne-proj.org/taxonomy/term/30
you'll see that there's a field just for 'Source' and you also fill
out the Description area as well.
