They are automatically spread out in the sense that they are scheduled such that the most urgent ones are shown first. They only thing it does not do is e.g. changing the number of 'due cards', as that would just be putting your hand in the sand. So, in practice, pick a number of reviews per day you are comfortable with, and then keep on doing this for a while until you've cleared the backlog. If you find this to hard, then you should probably cut down on the number of new cards you add.
