Actually, I'd also be interested in hearing people's thoughts on this.

Here's how I would use the 3-sided card type for that:

foreign word: kanji + audio
pronunciation: nana
translation: English

Then you'll have two cards, one for the passive recognition from Japanese, and 
one for the active recall from English.
