As Windows has so many combinations of OS and hardware of all kinds, would it 
be helpful — more than disruptive, to suggest that sometimes:  a Linux distro 
on a usb-stick or even DVD-RW  could be tried for better compatibility.  The 
expense would be the USB-stick or DVD + a few hours of invaluable time.  In 
case it works ow t the payback could be considerable.
