First of all, make sure you are using Mnemosyne 2.2.1. Second, make
sure latex is installed correctly, by opening a command prompt and
typing 'latex'. You should get no error.
Then try with this example in Mnemosyne:
<$>x^2+y^2=z^2</$>
Note the / instead of the \.
