To further answer my problem.
As you suggested I added
"from OpenGL import GL"
to the mnemosyne script, and now it works

On Debian stretch mnemosyne stopped working.
error is QOpenGLShaderProgram: could not create shader program and black screen.
I tried starting it with the command line option as recommended  
--qt-opengl=desktop, without success.
I have tried the Debian build in version also with similar results.
