Tim, I asked a similar question months ago and the question went unanswered.
I was informed by a couchbase employee over drinks that the documentation for shadowing had been silently removed. That's all I was told about the future of the product. Because of this ambiguity, we actually decided to move away from couchbase lite and sync gateway for our product.
