I'm not using a public AMI. Just Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0 (HVM).

What's even weirder is that I have 2 EC2 nodes. The first one worked fine, 
and the second one had the perl issue. We are very careful to make sure 
both nodes are exactly the same. (Will most likely move to docker down the 
road)

I did uninstall using rpm -e the previous sg version and reinstalled using 
rpm -i.
