It seems to me that the first decision you need to make for any addons system is "sandboxed or privileged" - i.e. "limited, defined API" or "full internals access". On desktop, Chrome does the former, and Firefox does the latter. With the former, you lose power, but you are much less likely to break addons with upgrades. With the latter, you gain power, but you also are more likely to have problems with malicious addons, and things break when you change the internals. Perhaps the latter is not possible on iOS anyway, so the decision is easy.
